Functional darts are those that fit the body curves, where as decorative darts are made more for style purpose and significance to the designs. E.g. darted puff sleeve, neck line etc.
Darts are generally made on the wrong side, their size and position dependent upon the type of shaping and fullness required. It disposes fullness by withholding width or length, yet giving a smooth appearance to the garment. It is made by stitching a line that tapers to a point along a fold and gives a shape to the body bulge. Wherever it ends it points towards the fullest bulge of the body. Wider darts provide more shaping and narrower darts provide less shaping.
Two common types of darts are
- Straight dart (Dart with one end)
- Contour dart (Dart with two ends)
Other types constitute curved outwards, curved inwards and neckline darts.
