Lesson 9 : Fullness

Tucks

It is a fold of material of even width which is kept firmly in position by a machine stitch on the right side of the garment. It is a means of shaping the garment to the body, for holding in fullness or to add decorative effect in the garment.

Groups of tucks are used to control fullness or to add decorative effect at shoulders, waistlines, yokes, pockets or cuff sleeves etc. The tucks that are partly stitched help in shaping the garments. These are also used in children's garments to hold the allowance for growth. Tucks add body to thin fabrics and textural interest to plain fabrics.

Types of tucks

    1. Pin tucks
    2. Plain/Wide tucks
    3. Corded or piped tucks
    4. Shell tucks
