Lesson 10 : Principles Of Planning - II

Circulation

The path for movement from room to room and between floors must be good. Good circulation means independent entry to each living space through a common space. It should provide privacy to the members and not to disturb any member doing his/her work in the room. Straight, short, direct passages must be provided to connect the rooms within the same floor.

Types Of Circulation
Horizontal:
On the same floor

Vertical: From one floor to another, i.e. either above or below.
Good circulation between the rooms in same floor can be achieved by proper placement of the doors, grouping of the rooms and furniture arrangement.

Circulation should also be provided not only outside the room, but within the room – to move between sofas; around bed, dining table : with in the kitchen, in front of the cabinet etc.

Staircase is the only thoroughfare for the circulation from floor to floor. Some of the residential houses that accommodates physically challenged or senior citizen and multi-storied residential apartment that has more than four floors, provides mechanical lifts in addition to staircase for convenience.

Bad circulation within a room detracts considerably from its usefulness and if there is no good circulation in the house, much of pleasure and comfort is lost. It is criminal negligence on the part of the designer if one has to enter for servants will be beneficial.
