The important physiological functions of calcium are:

  • Bone formation
  • Teeth formation
  • Clotting of blood
  • Regulates permeability of capillary walls
  • Contraction and relaxation of heart muscle
  • Regulates excitability of nerve fibres and nerve centers
  • Activation of the enzyme ‘rennin’ present in gastric juice
  • Participates in several enzyme reactions in the body
  • Hormone secretion
