Factors Affecting Choice Of Standards

Lesson 16 : Factors Influencing Standards And Interrelatedness Of Values, Goals And Standards

Factors Affecting Choice Of Standards

Families have different standards. The difference in their choice of standard could be due to many factors. These factors are

  • Cost of available resources
  • Fundamental values and goals
  • Effect on people
  • Social acceptability of a standard

Cost of Available Resources: Standards are governed by the family's affordability. One family, which has enough economic resources to spend on daughter's higher education, will be able to have higher standard for education than the family who could not manage enough money to do so.

Fundamental Values and Goals: Standards are related to both values as well as goals. A family which values economic independence of women and has a family goal of making the daughter economically independent, will have higher standard for education for the daughter than the one who wants to just marry their daughter off at certain age.

Effect on People: Convenience or desire of the family members also determines the standards. A family having a daughter who desires to study hard for higher education or work outside home to become economically independent, will have higher standard for daughter's education than the family having a daughter who simply wishes to get married and become a housewife.

Social Acceptability of a Standard: The standards are also influenced by their acceptability with in a social group. Conventional standards are easily acceptable by large number of families in the society. However, non-conventional standards are accepted by only few. A family living in a society where sending daughters for higher education is largely practiced, may hold the standard of higher education for daughter than the family living in a society where girls are usually not allowed to go out of the house unescorted to the school or to work outside.
