Hatching-Types

Hatching is a technique where you apply tone and texture in rows of parallel lines. The most basic method of creating value in ink drawing is linear hatching. Fine parallel lines fill an area, so that from just a slight distance, we have the illusion of value. The closer the lines are, the less white paper shows, and the darker the value appears. Heavier line weight (pressing more firmly or using a bigger nib or a darker pencil) also gives a darker appearance. Cross Hatching is where you crisscross several layers of Hatching in order to darken your tones.
Hatched lines should be drawn lightly and closely together. When beginning the paper at an angle to find a comfortable position for drawing. Change the angle of the paper (and not your body position) when applying further layers of cross hatching. A comfortable and fixed drawing position is the key to consistent cross hatching.
