Psychological impact of colours

Colours express various psychological moods of human being. They are associated differently with the different aspects like feelings, emotions, age group, gender, occasion, occupation, action etc. The colour psychology is expressed as follows:

  • The whole colour spectrum covers a wide range of human emotions. For example green is associated with envy. The frequently appear colour associations are listed below:
    • Red: The red colour is symbol of love, power, courage, passion, excitement, danger, crime and violence.
    • Red-Orange: The feeling of cheerfulness, spirit, energy, strength, boldness and action comes with red-orange colour.
    • Orange: The colour orange denotes warmth, joy, youthfulness, enthusiasm, force and excitement.
    • Yellow-Orange: Prosperity, pleasure, gaiety, kindness, hopefulness and openness comes with use of yellow-orange colour.
    • Yellow: The yellow colour signifies brightness, wisdom, happiness, enlightenment, warmth, ill health and weakness.
    • Green: Youth, inexperience, growth, envy, wealth, refreshment, rest and calmness are symbolized by green colour.
    • Blue: Blue is the hue of calmness, loyalty, sincerity, conservatism, submissiveness, honor, gentleness, depression and quietness.
    • Violet: Violet colour is symbol of royalty, majesty, dominance and supremacy. Formality, melancholy and quietness are the other aspects denoted by violet colour.
    • Brown: The brown colour shows casualness, silence, friendliness, humbleness, naturalness and earthiness.
    • Black: Black colour implies the feeling of formality, dignity, grief, sorrow, sophistication, shadow, uncertainty, threatening and secrecy. Due to that it is associated with the any causality and death.
    • Grey: The colour grey symbolizes calmness, quietness, dignity, flexibility and regret.
    • White: White colour is associated with purity, innocence, hope, cleanliness, spiritualism, delicacy, forgiveness, love and enlightenment.
  • Colours induced the feeling of action which ranged from motivating to relaxing. Colours affect the human physiology viz. heartbeat, respiration, brain activity and blood pressure. Warm, light and bright colours are more stimulating; cool, dull, and dark colours are more relaxing.
  • Gender is also uttered by colours. Warm hues, light pastel values and soft intensities are more flowing, graceful, soft and feminine whereas, cool hues, dark values, and bright intensities suggest calm, strength and masculinity. For example blue is considered as masculine and pink as feminine colour.
  • The idea of classiness is closely associated with the age. For examples cool hues look courteous, experienced, and mature while, warm hues look young, happy and carefree. In other case tints of hues appear pure, young and naive; shades appear older, smoother and calm. For example dark, dull colours are not preferred for children and bright tints for elderly people.
  • Some colours scream attention with energy and elegance; other with their fine distinctions with subtle relationships. For examples warm and bright colours gain attention of viewer; and cool and dull colour combinations offer gentle look.
  • The colour reflects the mood of seasons. All colours in nature are associated with some meaning like stages of growth, ripening of fruits, and decay of leaves also suggests seasonal rise and decline. The colour spectrum is waking parallel with seasons; blue with cold winter to blue-green and green with budding spring, green, yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange with the un-folding summer, to the maturing autumn of orange, red-orange, red, and red- violet, and back, violet, blue-violet with the sleeping winter.
  • The pastel tints suggest the freshness of spring and early summer; and duller shades, recline of fall and winter. Designers depict stages of seasons in their design collections. The spring fashion frequently comes in pastels, summer colours are lively and happy, and fall fashions are in dark and rich colours.
