PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 4: Elements of Design: Texture & Colour

The Prang colour system

There are three properties or qualities which may be called the dimensions of colour, and which are distinct from one another. These colour dimensions are:

  1. Warmth or coolness (the hue or name of the colour)

  2. Lightness or darkness (the value of the colour)

  3. Brightness or dullness (the intensity or chroma of the colour)

All three of these dimensions- hue, value, and intensity are present in every colour, just as every object has length, breadth and thickness.
