The word "embroidery" is now generally more readily associated with forms of machine embroidery than any of the more traditional forms of "hand embroidery" (Fig.11.5). Modern embroidery machines can trim and change colours automatically and can have anywhere up to 15 or more needles per head. Machine embroidery commonly uses polyester, rayon, or metallic embroidery threads. Markings are transferred to the right side of the fabric and then worked out. For embroidering sheer fabrics, tissue paper or voile can be used from wrong side to prevent slipping and pulling. Machine embroidery can be done by:
