Textile designer

Textile designers are the trained professionals having sound technical knowledge of each and every aspect of fabric manufacturing. The textile designers make drawings of initial concepts and work with various yarns, fabrics and finishes according to the end use of the fabric by translating the designs into marketable fabrics. In simple words, textile designer is a person who designs the textiles. Textile designer must have the knowledge of yarn making, weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing and finishing processes, and also knowledge about different types of looms and knitting machines. The designer's deep understanding of the technical aspects of production and the properties of fibres, yarns and fabric helps him in visualizing the end product. He should also have in-depth knowledge of elements and principles of arts and their role in design development and making the designs attractive. He should be part artist and part textile expert. He should also have understanding of social, cultural and historical perspectives of the region for which he creates textile designs.

Textile designers should keep themselves updated about any new techniques or developments in the field of textile designing. They have to coordinate different facets of textile manufacturing with market demands as well as fashion trends and design forecasts. They create designs according to customers' requirements, make samples or having them constructed by technicians, do research in developing design according to modern trends, liaising with clients; technical staff, marketing and buying staff, keep upto date with developments in manufacturing technology. They have to sometimes work with colleagues as part of a design team, and be involved with each stage of the design process.
