Lesson 13: Role of Design in Fashion

Role of design in fashion

  1. To create innovation in terms of new fibers & yarns and combinations.
  2. To diversify the products: for example, with changing time, modifications have been made in our traditional textiles also, the places which were traditionally famous for the production of sarees only, are now making suit lengths, home furnishings etc. to attract large segment of consumers. Designs were also modified according to the end uses. For example Chikan embroidery of Lucknow was traditionally done on fine white fabric with white thread but now-a-days it is being done with differently coloured threads on different background fabrics. Same traditional designs on diversified products can enhance the market value of new products also.
  3. To create fusion of two art forms for novelty effects: for example, Madhubani designs on sarees and dress material through fabric painting.
  4. To create a theme: for example, for summer collection stylized fruit and flower designs can be depicted in natural colours to convey freshness, coolness etc.
  5. To represent some idea: for example, to show peace and harmony, symbolic forms can be taken or wise use of colours can be made.
  6. To revive a dying art form: Many traditional arts are dying; designers revive them by portraying them through different techniques on textiles and showcase it as a new ethnic trend.
  7. To capture the beautiful design details of architectural wonders through adaptation of their designs for textiles.
  8. To portray mythological or historical events with the message: Sri krishna preaching Geeta to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra has influenced many contemporary textile designers.
