Harmony

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 6:Principles of DesignProportion, Harmony and Emphasis

Harmony

If the principles of proportion, balance, emphasis and rhythm are applied creatively so that there is a sense of beauty in the design, the resulting attribute will be that of harmony or unity. It is a culminating goal toward which we are striving when we select and arrange the various elements of design for a particular design. If we have failed to apply any one of the principles of design, then the resulting design will also lack harmony. Harmony lies between the two extremes of monotony and contrast. It combines the character of both. Harmony is like the middle gray that is composed of two extremes white and black. Principle of unity with variety should be there in any design to describe it as harmonic design. In textile designing principle of harmony has following important aspects:

  1. Harmony of line and shape

  2. Harmony of size: The aspect of proportion called ‘scale’ is applied to harmony in the sense of ‘harmonious or consistent sizes’.

  3. Harmony of colour

  4. Harmony of texture
