6.2.1.2.1.8 Sphingomyelins

The sphingomyelins on hydrolysis yield a fatty acid, phosphoric acid, choline, and a complex amino alcohol,  sphingosine. No glycerol is present. The sphingosine in which a fatty acid is substituted in the amino group is called a ceramide. Sphingomyelins are found in large quantities in brain and nerve tissue.
