6.5.1.1.2 Dehydrogenation of the CoA ester in the α, ß position

After the entry of the saturated fatty acyl-CoA ester into the matrix, it undergoes enzymatic dehydrogenation at the α and ß carbon atoms(carbon 2 & 3) to form a double bond in the carbon chain, thus yielding a trans-2-S-enoyl-CoA as the product, in a step catalyzed by acyl-CoA dehydrogenase.

                           Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase

 Fatty acyl-S-CoA + FAD --> trans-2-S-enoyl-CoA+ FADH2

            Acyl-CoA
