Sodium Chloride Poisoning (Salt Poisoning)

SOURCES OF SODIUM CHLORIDE POISONING
(Salt poisoning)

  • Common salt is added to the feed routinely.
  • However, toxicity may occur due to over dosage. This salt toxicity is also known as water deprivation syndrome as it is unlikely to occur when adequate supply of drinking water is available.
  • Poultry and pigs are more susceptible.
  • Young chicks are more susceptible because of their indiscriminate feeding behaviour, poor sense of taste, low plasma protein and decreased glomerular filtration area.
