Using the Start Button

The windows start button provides access to programmes and documents, the help feature, and many other elements in windows 98.

Programmes

Displays a submenu (also called cascading or secondary menu) that includes windows accessory programmes, online services, internet explorer, and other programmes on your computer.

Documents

Displays upto 15 of the most recently opened document; or quick and easy access ,click the document name and the application.

Settings

Displays a secondary menu that includes the control panel and printers folders, and the taskbar command for customizing your windows setup.

Find

Enables you to search for specific files, folders, or computer s.

Help

Displays help for performing tasks and procedures in windows.

Run

Enables you to enter a command line (such as c:\programme files\word.exe) to run a programme from hard, floppy, or CD disks.

Shut Down

Displays the shutdown dialog box in which you prepare your computer before turning it off.

To shut down Windows, follow these steps

  • From the Desktop, click start, shut down.
  • When the Shutdown Windows dialog box appears, choose one of the options previously described. To quit working on the computer, choose Shut Down the computer. Then choose yes.
  • Do not turn the computer off until Windows displays the message telling you that it's okay to turn off your computer (some computers turn off automatically, so thi s message isn't displayed).
