Types of Furniture

Furniture includes diverse range of quality products which are Sofa sets, tables, chairs, shelves, stools, beds etc.

  1. Lounge or Sofa
  2. Lounge or Sofa seating, the standard centerpiece of most domestic living rooms, is always conceived as a base with legs supporting a structural framework to hold seat upholstery. The upholstery incorporates a backrest and armrests.

The seat depth and height are the critical dimensions for lounge seating. Incorrect seat height and depth makes the user uncomfortable. If the seat is too high and shallow, the user is forced to sit bolt upright. If the seat is too low and too deep, the user is strained for a leg thrust to comfortably lower or rise with ease. The length and overall height may be any dimension that suits a design concept.

    Sofas:
Sofas must have at least an upholstered seat to be termed a sofa. Many terms are used to describe the sofa component.
    • Chesterfield is an English term used to describe a sofa that is usually tufted and/or buttoned.
    • Davenport is an American term used to indicate any type of lounge.
    • A Lawson- type sofa is one that has loose seat cushions and sometimes back cushions as well. A settee is a small sofa.
    • A love seat is a two person settee.

Designers developed numerous distinctions in sofa designs, including the then new ideas of comfort that could be gained by softly upholstered furniture.

Materials for sofas: Sofa construction is usually a wood-frame structure, some-times with innersprings, covered with stuffing or batting. Loose cushions can be filled with various materials, such as foam rubber, plastic foam, feathers, Dacron, or goose down, depending on the degree of softness, resilience and luxury that is desired. Some sofa frames are made of metal, some are molded or rigid plastic is used.

Fabrics used to cover sofas are virtually limitless, but maintenance can be problematic on wear points, especially when light- colored. This problem can be reduced with a protective, dirt-resistant impregnation.

  3. Tables:

Tables have two critical dimension-height and width. The height of a table is determined by its purpose. A table for dining is of one height, a table for writing another, for coffee yet another height. Conference or kitchen work tables, desks, and drafting tables require other height adjustments. In relation to specific use, there is variation in width also.

Tables can bring people together or keep them apart. A dining table, for example, can make dinner a warm, friendly event when the number of people fits well with the table size. A table of a much larger size may separate the same number of people, giving a sense of austerity or stiff formality. The same emotional responses arise from conference table. All of the furniture and furnishings carry emotional weight, for good or otherwise. Tables when used for daily meals, special dinners or matters pertaining to business and professional life, also carry an emotional load that the designer or interiors must be aware of and must take into account when design decisions are made.

Materials for tables: Tables have been made from a variety of materials: stone- marble, granite, metal-iron, steel, aluminum, brass copper, glass and plastic -molded, bent, plain and decorated.

Movable Furniture Components:

Although movable furniture comes in an endless variety of shapes and sizes, the basic forms of this component group are few; beds, chairs, sofas and other lounge pieces; tables and case pieces comprise the group in its entiety.
