Practical lesson 6: Observation of social and language development of infants (birth – 6 months)
Introduction: Infants respond to other people from the beginning. By the age of one month they react to voices and alternative to faces. Theybegin to smile at other people by three months. By six months infants show clear attachment to a particular person in the environment, usually the mother and later towards family members. This development of attachment creates a feeling of safety and security in the child.
Language learning largely depends upon maturation of brain processes and physical structures concerned with making of speech sounds. By the end of the second moth, infants begin to laugh and coo, making soft how vowel sound in response to others. At about 5-6 months. Infants combine vowel and consonant sound in strings of syllables like ba ba ba, da da da etc.
Aim: To understand the social and language development of infants (birth – 6 months).
