Objective: As per 2001 census, the sex ratio in Karnataka is 964 females to 1000 males. Though this is better than the national average, the current situation is strong argument for according higher value to the life of a girl child. There are several socio economic reasons for the 'strong preference for a male pregnancy' that is seen to be present in society at large which adversely affects the girl child's access to nutrition, health care and education and her overall development. In order to show the state government's concern for the girl child and change society's attitudes towards her and promote birth of girl children in below poverty line families, a new welfare scheme called Bhagyalakshmi was launched.
