PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION

Classification of Applied or decorative designs

Realistic or naturalistic designs: Naturalistic designs are those which represent flowers, birds, fish, landscapes etc. in an easily recognizable form. These designs depict natural objects (Fig.2.18) in a real manner. When applied to objects other than nature, design is considered as realistic; both naturalistic and realistic designs represent the familiar aspects of objects. A true work of art needs more than an exact similarity to something from nature for it to have lasting appeal. There is no place in art today for the artist who represents objects in a realistic manner because camera can do this work so much better. Most realistic designs have little merit for decorative purposes.

Stylized or conventional design: Stylized design distorts real and natural objects (Fig.2.19). The original source of inspiration for a stylized design is generally recognizable but the object is exaggerated or simplified in such a way as to give it an unusual form which produce dramatic forms and pronounced rhythms. Paisley prints are an example of a traditional design that is a stylized leaf. Stylized designs frequently use colours and proportions that are not natural.

Abstract designs: Abstract designs have little or no reference to real objects (Fig.2.20). The abstract shape may draw its inspiration from nature, but it is definitely man-created. In case of abstract design the subject is modified and organized to make it suit the purpose for which the design will be used. These designs express certain qualities such as dignity, gaiety or grotesqueness (ugliness). In abstract designs forms are so organized that the identity of an object may be lost, or ambivalent images may appear through the lack of a sufficient number of identifying cues. Moreover, abstract design does not rely solely upon objects for its content but includes ideas, emotions and qualities. Artist may simplify, exaggerate, rearrange, and in general make a planned organization that involves the expression of his/her imagination. The simplification makes the design more easily understood or serves as a shorthand method of representation or symbolization. The exaggeration gives it more individuality. Any variation from the naturalistic shape is one which requires first, the use of the imagination to visualize, and second, the ability to execute the vision into a satisfactory abstract form. The more we use the imagination, the more active it becomes. The more we resort to copying the ideas of others, the more difficult it becomes to use our own imaginations.

Geometric designs: Geometric designs are the forms composed of lines and curves (Fig.2.21) In other words 'geometric' means a shape that is not a picture of something in the real world. A shape that is not associated with anything from nature, such as they do not resemble any natural forms like birds, flowers, animals etc. Geometric designs are the most prevalent type of design, other than floral. Geometric shapes such as squares and rectangles have one common aspect of stability because of their flat bases. Circles, ovals, spares and ellipses, however, have no true bases and seem to be unstable and more capable of movement. It is not always necessary to space the shape in a very regular and measured manner. Shapes can be overlapped and gave the depth to a pattern.
