Introduction

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 2: Classification of Textile Designs

Introduction

Design is defined as any arrangement of lines, forms, colours and textures. In other words, the arrangement of the visual elements of an object or a work of art is called a design. More commonly it refers to the arrangement of visual elements and most often the arrangement in decorative objects. A good design shows an orderly arrangement of the materials used and, in addition, creates beauty in the finished product.

Design is achieved on fabric in either or both of the following two ways:
(1) By arranging or manipulating the yarns in fabric construction e.g. woven fabric, so that a design is formed.
(2) By applying a design to the fabric surface through printing, painting, embroidery etc. after the fabric has been constructed.

The two types of design will be hereafter designated as structural and applied designs respectively. The two kinds of design are Structural and Decorative design.
