Balance

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 5: Principles of Design - Balance and Rhythm

Balance

Balance may be defined as the quality that creates a sensation of equilibrium or feeling of stability. It is the arrangement of the objects in a given design as it relates to their visual weight within a composition.

Definition: Balance is rest or repose. This restful effect is obtained by grouping shapes and colours around a centre in such a way that there is equal attraction on each side of that centre.

Balance is concerned with the distribution of visual interest - what is where in a composition. Visual interest is what we balance in design. Different colours, shapes sizes, etc. create different degrees of interest. It is the distribution of this interest that is needs to be controlled.

Types of balance
There are three basic types of balance:

  1. Formal balance
  2. Informal balance
  3. Radial balance
