Origin: Great Britain

  • At different times attempts have been made to create a buff  goose, and to Wales goes the credit of originating the Brecon Buff, founded on stock from Breconshire hill farms, the breed being recognized officially in 1934.
  • Hard, light in bone, with maximum flesh, and an active breed, it is also more prolific than the ultra-heavy breeds.
  • General characteristics: male and female
  • Carriage: Upright and alert, indicative of activity.
  • Type: Body broad, well rounded and compact. Breast round. Dual-lobed paunch. Wings strong.
  • Head: Neat, no sign of coarseness. Eyes bright.
  • Neck: Medium, the throat showing no gullet.
  • Legs and feet: Legs fairly short. Strong shanks. Straight toes connected by web. Plumage: Hard and tight.

Colour

  • Plumage in both sexes: A deep shade of buff throughout with markings similar to those of the Toulouse. Ganders are usually not as deep coloured as geese. In both sexes: Bill pink. Eyes dark brown. Legs and webs pink.

  • Goose : 6.35-8.16kg (14-18lb)

Buff black

  • Origin: Europe
  • General characteristics: male and female
  • Carriage: Nearly horizontal.
  • Type: Body moderately long, plump, deep and meaty with no evidence of a keel. Back slightly convex and approximately 60% broader than deep. Paunch moderately broad, deep and double-lobed. Wings rather long with the tips crossing over the tail coverts. Carried high and smoothly folded. Tail somewhat short, closely folded and carried nearly level.
  • Head: Fairly broad and somewhat refined with a nearly flat crown.
  • Bill medium in length, nearly straight and stout.
  • Eyes large and rather prominent.
  • Neck: Medium length, moderately stout and carried rather upright with little or no indication of an arch.
  • Legs and feet: Lower thighs medium length, plump and nearly concealed by ample thigh coverts. Shanks moderately long and rather refined, yet sturdy.

Colour

  • Plumage of both sexes: Head buff. Neck buff on the upper part and white on the lower. Back buff (in a heart shape) with each feather edged with near white.
  • Breast, body, wings and tail white, except in some specimens for a broad band of buff edged with near-white beginning under the secondaries (just over the shanks) and extending under the abdomen to the opposite wing. Remainder of plumage white, except for large thigh coverts, which are buff and edged with white.
  • In both sexes: Bill orange. Eyes blue. Legs and webs orange.
