Lesson 10:Garden Features

Frontage

  • The frontage of a border is perhaps more important than the background, as the border will be viewed from front only.
  • The best frontage is a stretch of neatly kept lawn because this provides a good foreground colour.
This must be wide enough and should nearly be not less than 2 meters across.

  • For a larger border, it may be as wide as 3 meters.
  • A paved brick or stone walk is considered the best because this provides a firm and clean walk throughout the year.
  • The informal edging, 30-45 cm of width between the border and grass may be constructed of paved stone or brick.
  • It has some advantage, as some plants in the border overhang the edge and make mowing of grass difficult.
  • In a wide border, plants of all heights are accommodated provided the grower can give enough attention on the staking of tallest plants.
  • For a narrow-width or double-faced border, the maximum height should be limited to 3 meter
