Sources Of Values

Lesson 11 : Values

Sources Of Values

The main source of value pattern is the family and parents for the child. Then as the child grows and its social community grows the values are influenced and set to changes and modifications. The values grow out of human interest and desires. They are the products of interaction between an individual and some object or situation in his environment. It is like a stimulus response reaction. The value satisfaction from any object or situation is that quality that causes the individual to respond or would cause the response if the two were brought together. The human interests and desires together with the attitudinal patterns in family living lead to the realization of the values in the home. Values differ in different cultures and that children absorb the values of their own culture. Thus the individual gets his values of their own culture. The realization of the value happens through the act of valueing, or pricing and cherishing and through choosing and expressing the value in the way one uses his resource.

The family has the major responsibility for fostering values among the members. Leonard Mayo said in regard to spiritual values that the family is not only the best conveyor of values but is the producer of values. In sharing of family plans and managerial activities, values are usually absorbed and inculcated.

Parker lists the following as the motivating values of human behaviour-comfort, health, ambition, love, desire for knowledge, technological satisfaction, play, art, religion etc.
