Back yokes are developed without the shoulder dart. Excess from the dart is transferred to mid armhole where it may remain, or be eliminated at the yoke line of the armhole, as illustrated. Use this yoke to develop patterns for designs 2, 3, and 4.
Pattern plot and development
Figure 1
To establish the back yoke, square a line from the centre back to mid-armhole, or at a point that is one-fourth of the centre back length.
Draw a line down from dart point of the shoulder dart to yoke line for use as the pivotal point. Label as shown.
Figure 2
Place pattern on paper with pushpin through pivotal point. Cross mark yoke line on paper at points A and B, and trace pattern from A to dart leg C. Cross mark (bold line of shaded area).
Figure 3
Pivot pattern so that dart leg D touches Crossmark on paper.
Trace remaining pattern from dart leg D to B on pattern. Crossmark and label armhole E. remove pattern.
Figure 4
Draw line connecting A to B. (The distance between E and B on paper represents dart excess).
