Introduction

Surface designing refers to superficial embellishment on the fabric or applied design on any substrate. There are many ways such as dyeing, printing, painting, embroidery, weaving and surface finishes which can be employed for the surface enrichment of the fabric. The processes such as printing, dyeing and finishing are wet processes whereas embroidery is basically needle and thread work. The different processes used for decorating textiles are different from each other with respect to use of technique, equipment and machinery but their main objective is same i.e. to enhance the surface characteristics of the fabric. The following classification enlists the various processes used as medium of applied decoration on textiles:

Printing

Resist dyeing

Painting

Finishes

  3. Chemical finishes

Embroidery

    1. Hand embroidery
    2. Machine embroidery
