PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 6:Principles of DesignProportion, Harmony and Emphasis

Emphasis

Every design needs some note of interest that catches the eye or arrests the attention. This quality may be referred to as the centre of interest, point of emphasis or dominant area. It involves the principles of design which leads the eye first to the most important part of the design and then to other subordinating areas in the order of their importance. Success of the result depends upon knowledge of:

  1. What to emphasize: Design must be clear of the thing “what to emphasize”. If motifs or designs are to be emphasized the negative area should be less conspicuous than the designs to be seen against it and if background has to be emphasized then motifs should not dominate the scene.

  2. How to emphasize

  3. How much to emphasize
