Harmony of colour

Certain colour combinations give pleasure to the eye and others offend. Until one has had a great deal of practice in combining colours, it is helpful to follow those combinations which have been used successfully by artists for many years. Harmony in colour combinations may be achieved by combining related or contrasting colours.

Related colour harmonies are those in which the colours are similar, they include one hue harmony and the analogous harmony (Fig. 6.12).

Combinations of opposite colours are more difficult to use than those of neighbouring ones (Fig. 6.13). When they are well done, they are richer than related harmonies and more satisfying to the eye. The contrasting harmonies are complementary, double complementary, split complimentary, triads and tetrads.
