By contrast of lines, shapes and sizes

Contrast is as essential to design as unity. Variety stimulates interest and arouses excitement. Variety vitalizes designs. A composition with too little contrast is monotonous and insipid. The amount of variety depends upon the temperament of the artists and the purpose of design. Contrast is like salt; its use is governed by taste. Some temperaments prefer subdued and muted harmony; others demand strong opposition. Examples of contrast have been shown from fig.6.4.
