Concept and Definitions

  • Assessment may be defined as the process of gathering information for the purpose of making a critical decision concerning the child (Mc. Lean, 1996).
  • It is a broader practice that consists of both qualitative and quantitative picture of the individual. It is the ongoing process by qualified personnel to determine the child’s individual needs, family needs, their strengths related to the development of the child, and the nature and extent of early intervention services.
  • This process includes systematic observation and standardized testing in various domains of development..of collecting information about the child for the purpose of making critical decisions concerning the youngster.


In educational settings assessment data is used to make five kinds of decisions like Screening, Classification, Intervention planning, Student evaluation and Programme evaluation.
