The most common system of sex determination in fish as in other vertebrates is known as the XY system. The individuals that are homogametic (XX) are female, while heterogametic (XY) individuals are males.

In the second system, the male is homogametic (ZZ) and the female is heterogametic (WZ). This system is known as the WZ system.
