3.1.26. Hermaphroditism

A hermaphrodite is an animal or plant with both male and female reproductive organs. In crustaceans such as the Notostraca, or tadpole shrimp, shrimp are hatched containing both male and female sexual characteristics. The ovaries contain sperm producing lobes and eggs.
In other species, such as the cirripede, males and hermaphrodites exist simultaneously. The males, if present, are much smaller than the hermaphrodites and called dwarfs. They attach themselves to the hermaphrodite to assist in the fertilization of the eggs.
