3.2.19. Sound producing muscle

  • A number of fish make humming, grunting or other low pitched sounds tonal fish (Opsanus tall), squirrel fish (Holocertrus rufus), northern midshipman (Porichthys notatus) procedure sound.
  • Mechanism is a pair of striated muscle located symmetrically on and completely attached to the wall of the swimbladder.
  • Sound is produced by rapid muscular contractions of the muscles, which causes resonant – vibrations of the swim bladder.
