The United Nations Environment Programme is focusing on children's basic needs through features in its publication, a symposium on "Environment, education and the child," scientific studies on malaria and schistosomiasis with emphasis on children, World Environment Folder on child development, a compilation of research studies on "The environment and child development in Africa," the preparation of the information component of the UNEP/UNICEF water project Swaziland. Pilot studies on formal and non-formal environmental education for children, comparative studies on an integrated approach to slum improvement with emphasis on children, and a theme paper for IYC on the environment for children of the future.
