Suggestions for good pattern arrangement

To be new or different is not enough to make a print distinctive. For bringing distinction in prints some suggestions are as follows:

  • While organizing a design, arrangement of units or motifs should be done in an interesting order to avoid monotonous. Variety in pattern can be achieved by the variation of motif size, shape or colour. Change in Value and intensity of colour can break monotony.
  • When different motifs are combined in a design, they should be related to each other in shape and size, for the sake of unity.
  • Some variations and some similarity produce interest, unrelated shapes and sizes destroy harmony.
  • Motif shape is emphasized by value contrast from the background areas. Slight value difference makes the motif not easily discernible.
  • In order to avoid spotting, the arrangement of the pattern should show some movement from one motif to another. This should not be over done so that the pattern fatigues the eye.
  • The individual units of a pattern should be noticeable. They should neither be too vague nor scratchy in drawing nor carelessly scattered.
  • Simple individual units of a design such as dots, squares, triangles or abstract shapes, should be arranged in some strange ingenious orderly form or with some unusual colour combination for distinction.
  • Small elementary designs, that a child could draw, should be avoided.
  • Pictorial ideas treated in photographic manner such as naturalistic scenes, flowers or animals should be avoided. Such ideas should be chosen which may be treated in a highly abstract, conventionalized or stylized manner.
  • Shading of designs to give perspective should be avoided in case of all over pattern. Flatness of design can harmonize with to flatness of the cloth.
  • Use of light and dark colour should be so spaced that the dark lead the eye into light and light into dark without sudden changes or erratic eye movements.
  • One clear but unusual colour, with a neutral is generally satisfactory. A mixture of colours tends to be confusing. If more than two colours are used, one colour should predominate, but all should be harmonious.
