Decoration may also be applied to any surface. Such surface embellishment may be called applied decorative designs.
Application of decorative designs on a fabric is conditioned by
- The structural design of fabric
- End use of the fabric whether it is for furnishing or apparels or for some other purpose, it affects the size of motif, repeat size etc.
- The personality of the designer (which determines the character or quality of the design)
- Standards for good design (proper use of elements and principles of design)
- The amount of decoration desirable according to the purpose or end use
- The nature of design (stylized, geometrical, abstract or naturalistic)
