PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION

Method of evaluating applied decorative designs

In textile designing the main purpose of the design is to increase the aesthetic appearance of the plain fabric. In evaluating this, these questions may be asked.

  1. Is the applied design necessary?
    • If the surface is sufficient in itself there is no need for additional adornment. The application of the print may be unnecessary to a fabric composed of textural yarns with exciting variations in the spaces formed by the warp and weft.
  2. Is the applied design harmonious in use of colour, line, shapes, forms and idea?
  3. Is the background space pleasing in design?
  4. Does the design have merit and individuality?
Design merit like aesthetic distinction is an important concept for a design which makes some designs very satisfying when viewed over long periods of time. A work of art must not only appeal to the senses, it must have a communicative quality that builds up one’s awareness of life and creates a charismatic field of interaction between man and design. Designs lacking this ability lose their charm very soon.
