Difference between motif, pattern and design

A design starts with a motif (Fig.7.9). Hence, it is a unit of design. When a motif is repeated at certain interval in a particular manner over a surface it is called a pattern (Fig.7.10). Repetition of this pattern creates a design (Fig.7.11). Certain principles are used when repetition of the motif or the pattern took place to create different designs. A look at the following illustrations will help in realizing how a motif can be used to make a pattern and the pattern to make a design.
