Dobby

These are small figured designs, which repeat on less than 25 threads (harness). Dobby is an attachment that controls the shedding mechanism and the loom is called dobby loom.

Role of Dobby in Creating designs

  • The design produced on dobby loom is often geometric figures (Fig.10.25).
  • The designs up to 48 picks can be woven.
  • Most suitable for shirting materials.
  • Bird’s-eye is a small diamond shaped filling float design in a white silk fabric, and at times was used for kitchen and hand towels too.
  • Dobby pattern chain helps to produce extra warp and extra weft designs.
  • Filament yarns are engaged for designs to give an emphasis against ground weave.
