Resist Printing

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 10: Methods of Producing Designs on Textiles: Printing, Dyeing & Painting

Resist Printing

In resist printing, a substance coats the fabric in pre-selected areas, thus preventing the fabric from absorbing dye in those areas. Common resist materials are starch, clay, etc. The technique has been used to produce designs on textiles in many different cultures, including those of Persia, India, South America, Egypt, and the Far East. The pattern of the design is printed with resist material onto the fabric, after printing fabric is dyed so that colour appears on the unprinted area. For example, Dabu is a mud-resist hand-block printing practiced in Rajasthan of India (Fig.10.3). The prints have a sublime quality and appearance.
