Tie and dye

Lesson 10: Methods of Producing Designs on Textiles: Printing, Dyeing & Painting

Tie and dye

Resist designs can be produced by tie-and-dye method in which parts of the fabric are tightly wound with other yarns. When the fabric is placed in a dye bath, the covered areas are protected from the dye. Careful attention to the shape of the wrapping and the placement of the tied areas can produce intricate and attractive patterns.

The fabrics most suitable for tie-dyeing are fine but densely woven cotton or mercerized cotton and silks of light colours like white or off white, and cream. However, synthetics can also be tie-dyed using an appropriate dye.

Most often the designs are random with interesting effects. But in some techniques well defined floral, animal, bird and human figures are tie-dyed especially using spot technique. A wooden block for such designs either engraved or nailed, is kept ready to work on it. In Indian textiles, the tie-and-dye method is known as bandanna or Bandhani. Various techniques of tying include sewing, tied circles, cross tying, object tying, ruching, marbling, pleating, knotting, fold and tie etc.
