PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 10: Methods of Producing Designs on Textiles: Printing, Dyeing & Painting

Hand Painting

The art of hand painting on fabric dates back to 4000 B.C. It is the oldest method of ornamenting fabrics although it is time consuming and because of this faster market requirements cannot be met. Kalamkari and Patchitra are the examples of traditional hand printed textiles of India.

Different types of dyes and pigments are used incorporating media most suitable for the fabric. It demands careful planning to decide which media is best suitable providing good colour fastness to laundry and dry- cleaning. Designs can be simple to very elaborative, yet look unique as it is hand painted (Fig. 10.16).
