Stencil Printing

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND APPLICATION
Lesson 10: Methods of Producing Designs on Textiles: Printing, Dyeing & Painting

Stencil Printing

It is one of the resist styles of textile printing methods; the resist being the stencil itself which prevents the paint from spreading beyond the margin of the cutout pattern. Stencils can be made out of heavy waxed paper, cardboard or metal.

There are basically two types of stenciling done; positive and negative. In case of negative stenciling, the paint is applied around the outside of a pattern and in positive stenciling, the dye is applied to the inside of the cut out openings (Fig.10.6).
