Lesson 1: Drafting Equipment – Tools And Materials

Architecture Engineering and Construction industry (AEC)

The AEC industry has based its system of sheet sizes on a grid and has adopted sizes which accommodate the larger objects they draw. This system is not an official one, in that it is not recognized by any construction industry organization, but if you were to go to a drafting supplier you would find drafting media and print paper made in sheet sizes based on 1/2 And 1 foot increments.

A popular and widely used size is 24" x 36" (2 ft. by 3 ft.). Occasionally for small projects and shop drawings you will see sheets half that size, 18" x 24". If you were to continue halving that size you come up with the final two small sizes of 12" x 18" and 9" x 12", Even though you can buy these sizes, they are really too small for industry. They are useful in education, however For sheets larger than the popular 24" x 36" there are several variations, all multiples of the foot or half foot modular dimension. Thus you can find any combination of 24", 30", 36",42", and 48". The most popular pre-cut media sizes for the, AEC industry are seen in Figure 20.
