Metric

For most of the civilized world, the system of measurement is the metric system. Measurement of length in the metric system is based on the meter which is equal to 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the red-orange radiation in a vacuum of kryp­ton 86. More practically the meter is just over a yard in length, or 39.37". A decimeter is 1/10 of a meter, a centimeter is 11100 of a meter, and a millimeter is 1/1000 of a meter.

Sheet sizes for the metric system are broken down like those of the ANSI system. The smallest size is that of a standard metric letter, 210 mm x 297 mm. That size is doubled four times to create the five standard sheet sizes. They are as follows:

The height of the previous drawing size becomes the width of the next size in the sequence.
The width of the previous drawing size doubled becomes the height of the next size in the sequence.
