They can be used either for functional purpose or for decorative purpose. They are made from a variety of raw material like wood, metal, steel, brass, pearl, leather, shell, bone and plastic. They are available either with shanks or without shanks. Buttons can also be made in cloth. The most common shape available is round, though even oval, rectangular, cylindrical and dumbbell shaped buttons are also available.
Types of Buttons
Ball: Rounded button with pierced or moulded stitching hole.
Shank: A shank button has a loop on the back, and the button is attached to the fabric with the stitches going through the loop. They are used on jackets, coats or other bulky garments.
Two-Hole: A flat button that has two holes that is generally used on shirts.
Four-Hole: A flat button that has four holes.
Cloth Covered Buttons: Buttons that are made with the matching fabric
