Once the choice of hem is made depending on the fabric type and style of the garment, it can be secured in the following ways
By hand stitching: The basic hand stitches used for hemming include the hemming stitch, the blind stitch, and the catch stitch.
By machine stitching: Done on a sewing machine, this type is suitable for casual wear, sleep wear and children’s garments. It can also be used on finishing home furnishings like curtains, table cloth etc. It is done using a normal machine stitch on a folded edge.
By facing: A facing is used for a hem when
the hem allowance is not wide enough to turn up
the fabric is too bulky to turn up
the skirt is circular in style
the hem has an unusual shape.
