Lesson 11 : Fasteners and Hems

Hem facing

A facing is applied when there is not enough fabric to finish the hem or when the material is too bulky to be folded over. To finish a flared hem, the facing is made by attaching enough bias strips in order to match the length of the hem. Facing is machine stitched to the raw edge of the garment, folded and hemmed or machine stitched. Facing for straight edges can be done using a straight strip either of the same color or a contrast colored fabric.
