Standards for a well finished hem

  • Flat and inconspicuous except when it is intended to be decorative.
  • Should be smooth and free from raveling.
  • Hem should be even in width and appropriate for garment style and fabric type.
  • Excess fullness evenly eased, free from pleats for a smooth and flat look.
  • Hem to be free from bulk from seams. It is better to grade seams to reduce bulk.
  • Hand stitches to be uniform, secure, and inconspicuous.
  • Hem to hang parallel to floor.
  • Fused hems securely fused and flat.
